Anthropic launches the Memory feature in Claude for Team and Enterprise users

Anthropic has taken a significant step by introducing the Memory feature in Claude, its artificial intelligence model. This long-awaited update, similar to the memory function of ChatGPT, is now available for customers on the Team and Enterprise versions. However, since several competing chatbots are already implementing memory features, it is likely that this functionality will soon be available to free users.
Details of the New Memory Feature
Claude users on the Team and Enterprise versions now have the ability for the chatbot to retain specific settings. This means that Claude will be able to remember details about projects, preferences, and even the user's name. Activating this feature is optional and can be managed entirely through the settings. Users can easily view, edit, or turn off what the chatbot remembers. Additionally, there remains the option for a "incognito" mode, similar to ChatGPT's temporary chat.
Cost and Availability
Despite the arrival of this highly anticipated memory feature, it is currently restricted to paid plans. The Max version, which was launched in April 2025, costs $100 per month, while the Pro option costs $17 per month. Nevertheless, there are expectations that free users will gain access to this feature in the near future. Here are four reasons suggesting that this feature may not remain restricted to paid users for long.
Competitive Gap Between Free and Paid Users
Anthropic's competitors are already offering memory functions at no cost. Companies like OpenAI and Google Gemini are implementing similar features across various versions. Both Pro and Max users have expressed that it is frustrating to have to constantly re-establish context. As memory becomes an expectation rather than an exceptional feature, free users will begin to demand access.
Experiments in the Max Plan
The rollout of the Max plan reinforces the idea that Anthropic is segmenting features based on user needs and usage. This implies that it is only a matter of time before features initially reserved for Enterprise users filter down to lower tiers, especially if the infrastructure already supports it.
Incognito Enabled for All Users
While memory is currently restricted to paid plans, Anthropic has made the Incognito Chat option available to all users. This indicates that the company considers privacy and memory-related features viable at all levels, even for non-paying users.
Potential for Memory Feature Expansion
Anthropic's Memory system focuses on projects, meaning that memorized summaries are editable. This feature provides users with a high degree of control and sets boundaries between projects and general use, facilitating safe scalability. Once internal tests on performance, costs, and privacy are successfully completed, expanding access to the memory function will become much more feasible.
For all subscription levels to access the Memory option, Anthropic must ensure that privacy controls are robust, so free users feel secure when enabling this function.
Technical aspects must also be considered, such as performance costs (storage, data retrieval, context management), which require optimization to ensure that memory at lower subscription levels does not degrade the quality of service.
User Expectations
When Claude's Memory feature expands to free users, it is expected that the initial strategy may involve limited memory or project-only memory for both paying and free users. It is also reasonable to imagine that clear optional settings, summaries, and interface cues will be implemented to help users understand what memory is active, as well as how to manage, view, or delete it.
As of today, the Memory feature is exclusive to paid teams, but the direction Anthropic is taking suggests that this restriction is not permanent. As user expectations rise and AI assistants become more relevant in daily and work life, memory seems destined to become a standard functionality rather than an additional feature.
Stay tuned for updates, especially if you are using Claude Pro or the free version, as this feature may be closer than it appears. Of course, when it becomes available, information will be promptly announced.
